Makakatana Bay Lodge is the only privately owned lodge set with the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site, the heart of Africa's largest natural estuary.
The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site is one of the few natural wonders left on earth where there are unspoilt wilderness beaches, vast wetlands and game reserves all combined into one reserve.

The lodge is set in dune forest that bursts out over a wetland onto the banks of the lake. Hippo and other wildlife often wander through the lodge, underneath the walkways.
A bench has been subtly placed close to the waters edge to allow one to quitely sit and birdwatch. Often, in season, the bay infront of the lodge has hundreds of pelican and other birds feeding
